CBD is one of the hottest trends in health and wellness. It has demonstrated a wide range of benefits, including: relieving pain, improving sleep, relieving anxiety and depression, relieving symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatment, protecting nerve cells, and more. Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion surrounding the product; what is the correct dosage? Since it is unregulated, how does one know if they are getting what the product label claims? The Wellnesstheory staff has been researching and experimenting with CBD to address a variety of issues for years, and we want to help clear up some of the confusion.
What is CBD?
CBD is an acronym for cannadidiol, one of the two primary active molecules found in the cannabis plant. The other primary molecule, THC, is the psychoactive substance, or the one that “gets you high.” THC and CBD are very similar in molecular structure, but there are key differences that result in THC being a psychoactive while CBD is not.
CBD works in the body by activating receptors in the brain and nervous system – the endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD affects different receptors in the ECS which are responsible for the regulation of many functions, like:
- Mood, and
- Immune Response, among others.
Most commercially available CBD is derived from the hemp plant, a non-psychoactive cousin of the marijuana plant.
What are The Benefits of CBD?
Because of its effect on the endocannabinoid system, CBD has been shown to provide a wide range of benefits. The benefits have been demonstrated in scientific studies, but researchers are really just starting to take notice of CBD, so many of the studies, while very promising, have been small. More research is needed and, fortunately, many new, larger studies are underway. For now, here is what we know:
Cannabinoids have been used to relieve pain for thousands of years! Studies have demonstrated that CBD can relieve pain associated with arthritis, multiple sclerosis (neuropathy), cancer/chemo associate pain, just to name a few. Further, CBD has not shown the harmful side effects associated with opioids and NSAIDS.
Anti-Anxiety / Anti-Depression
CBD has shown the ability to act on the brain’s receptors for the neurotransmitter serotonin, a regulator of mood and social behavior. Studies have shown it to be effective for public speaking anxiety, social anxiety, PTSD associated anxiety, and more. While anecdotal, our staff has personally experienced benefits for anxiety and mood regulation with CBD. Further, as a natural substance, CBD has again shown fewer side effects than pharmaceutical anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications.
Relatively large doses of CBD have shown to improve sleep for people suffering from insomnia, as well as other sleep disorders. Numerous wellness and biohacking authors/bloggers without a diagnosed sleep disorder credit CBD with helping improve their sleep quality. Again, anecdotal, but we have personal experience with CBD improving our sleep, especially during periods of heightened stress where we would typically wake up with our “minds running” and have difficulty falling back to sleep.
One of the most promising benefits of CBD is its neuroprotective properties. It has been shown to reduce spasticity related to MS, epileptic seizures, nerve damage from strokes and traumatic brain injuries (e.g., concussions), and prevent neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
CBD may help reduce symptoms related to cancer and side effects related to cancer treatment, like nausea, vomiting and pain. Further, it has been shown to trigger the death of breast cancer cells, and prevent the spread of both breast and lung cancer cells. Again, while promising, if you have been diagnosed with cancer, you should seek your doctor’s advice before using CBD.
Other potential benefits include reduced acne, antipsychotic properties, diabetes prevention, and improved heart health.
No wonder the proliferation of CBD is exploding! There are downsides; in addition to limited research, CBD products are largely unregulated. Random tests have discovered that many “CBD” products being sold contain a fraction of the actual CBD their labels claim. Further, the quality of the grower (example: hemp from China is cheap, but may be contaminated with a variety of environmental toxins), the extraction process, and product additives can greatly affect the efficacy of CBD.
After doing extensive research, we decided to carry Elixinol CBD products. Elixinol is VERY hands on in selecting their growers, insuring they start with the top quality organic hemp to extract their CBD. Elixinol is also one of the few companies that subjects their products to independent 3rd party testing to insure potency (i.e., the amount of CBD claimed on the bottle is what you get). Besides testing for potency, they also test for microbiological contamination, heavy metals, pesticides, and the unique terpene profile. In other words, they spare no expense to insure the consumer receives a top quality product. This is very important to us; our wellness warriors are going the extra mile to take ownership of their health, so when they trust us to play a role, we don’t take the responsibility lightly.
Elixinol comes in a variety of delivery options: tinctures, liposomes, and capsules. Our Wellness Specialists will be happy to assist you in choosing the right product for you.
